How to Insert Video Clips into PowerPoint
PowerPoint supports several ways to add video to a slide. Here are the main approaches, from built-in features to external tools.
Method 1: Insert a Local Video File
If you already have an MP4 or MOV file on your computer, you can insert it directly.
Steps:
- Go to Insert > Video > This Device.
- Select your video file and click Insert.
- Resize and position the video on the slide.
Limitations:
- You need the video file saved locally before you start.
- Large files can increase your presentation size significantly.
Method 2: Embed a YouTube Video
PowerPoint allows embedding online videos from YouTube without downloading them.
Steps:
- Go to Insert > Video > Online Video.
- Paste the YouTube URL or embed code.
- Click Insert.
Limitations:
- Requires an active internet connection during playback.
- Shows YouTube ads and player controls (play bar, logo, recommended videos).
- Only works with YouTube, not other platforms like TikTok, Instagram, or Vimeo.
Method 3: Convert to GIF and Insert as an Image
If you want a short clip to loop automatically without player controls, a GIF is a lightweight option.
Steps:
- Convert your video to GIF using a tool like Slidekick or another converter.
- In PowerPoint, go to Insert > Pictures > This Device.
- Select the GIF and insert it.
Limitations:
- GIFs have no audio.
- Quality and file size trade-offs apply for longer clips.
Method 4: Use Slidekick to Trim and Export
If you need to extract a specific moment from a video before inserting it, Slidekick simplifies the workflow.
With Slidekick:
- Paste the video URL or upload a file.
- Trim to the exact moment.
- Export as MP4 or GIF.
- Download and insert into PowerPoint.
Slidekick handles URL import, screen recording, offline uploads, and exports to MP4 or GIF.
If you insert video clips into PowerPoint regularly, Slidekick lets you paste any URL, trim visually, and export as MP4 or GIF — no install.
